Monty's Writings

I've been writing for a long time. There have been successful technical books, and unsuccessful plays and novels. This blog will display some work I hope may be of interest to my friends, or to anyone.

Math Newsletter
First, I have for eight years published a humorous math newsletter. (You can read the current issue at http://www.gnarlymath.com/news/gnews1_1.html) I have converted all 48 issues into an e-book, and you can see a sample, and buy a copy, at my web site

The Historical, Humorous Math Newspaper

Each issue of the Gnews contains some poetry, generally connected to math in some way. Mostly the poetry is limericks and clerihews. A collection of these verses will be found at

Better Endings
Second, I have often been dissatisfied with various literary works, and in thinking about it I realized it was the endings that failed to meet with my approval. The author may have intrigued and delighted me with his words, his characterizations and his plot, and then disappointed me with the way he finished his composition.

So I have taken the trouble to revise the denouement of various books, plays, and poems. The results I call "Better Endings".

It might be argued that I should have called them "Different Endings", or "Alternative Terminations". Who am I to say that these noted authors had done badly, or at least could have done better?

The answer is that I am nobody but a reader with opinions. Doubtless I am wrong, and each author provided the perfect ending, incapable of improvement.

The works which have been the subject of my chutzpah are:

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, by T.S. Eliot
Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
Candide, by Voltaire
The Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare
The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway
The Tyger, by William Blake
To His Coy Mistress, by Andrew Marvel

Poems, Songs, and Valentines
Third, I reluctantly admit that I am an amateur poet and songwriter.

"How are you?"
Fourth, I am a senior citizen and frequently am asked "How are you?" Over time, I've devised answers to that question. If you'd like to see the answers, and perhaps contribute one yourself,
just click here.

Plays
Fifth I once spent four or five years writing plays. I finished more than a dozen, and submitted them to every playwriting contest I could find. As a result, I have a very large collection of rejection slips. Two of the plays are one-acts, and you can click on their names to read them.

Bookmarks
Sixth and last, some years ago I invented a bookmark which marks the position on the page where you left off reading. You can download and print free copies of this bookmark by clicking here.
